The airport Zweibrücken was built in the beginning of the Fifties as a military airport by the French airforce and after its completion it was handed over to the Canadian airforce. They then handed the area, measuring 310 hectars, to the US Air Force in August 1969, who used the airport up to 1991 for their purposes. With the fall of the so-called ‚Iron Curtain’ that cut of the Eastern countries from the West, the strong military presence in Rhineland-Palatinate became obsolete.
Following this fact the airport Zweibrücken amongst many other properties was given back to the Federal Republic of Germany.

Already in autumn 1991 an association was formed, with the goal to advance the development of a bunched and coordinated civil reuse. The Association Development Area Airport Zweibrücken (ZEF) is carried by the local authorities and communities, on whose district the airport was once built on. Ambassadors of the communities Althornbach, Mauschbach, Contwig as well as memebers of the urban district of Zweibrücken and of the county Südwestpfalz are sent to the association conventions. The responsibilities of this association lie mainly in the tasks of the construction plan administration, accomodation and sanitation as well as the further conceptual development.

The area is developed with the so called 4-pillar-concept. Belonging to this concept are a multimedia internet park (MIP), the Designer Outlets (DOZ), different recreational facilities and the development of civil air traffic. All these pillars have developed very nicely. The number of employment jobs grew from 350 during the military utilisation, to over 2600 in September 2008.

The airport, which posseses a limited nightflight authorisation, has had a growth spurt since 2006.
Attractive destinations keep the passengers coming constantly in growing numbers. Many companies concerning the airport have settled in the area, covering domains like trade, attendance, production, instruction and airfreight, offering great developement possibilities.

The number of airport employees is growing constantly along with the growing destination offers, at the moment it lies at 100.
